History of NGP

The history of the National Gallery Prague began in 1796 with the founding of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts; however, its collections have roots dating back to the time of Rudolf II. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the institution developed systematically, leading to the establishment of the Modern Gallery as well as the exceptional French Collection. In 1949, the gallery was confirmed by law as a central state institution and today administers a number of significant buildings in Prague. The 230th anniversary represents an important milestone and opportunity for the National Gallery Prague. Exhibition, performative, and public events dedicated to the anniversary itself will take place throughout the entire year of 2026.
